Snowden B Barton was born near Covington, Ky, May 27, 1833. He with the family removed to Delaware county In, where he was reared to manhood. In 1856 he was married to Miss Nancy Athon. To this union were born six children of whom four, together with their mother, preceded him to the spirit land.
At the beginning of the Civil War, he was one of the first to answer the call of his country. He enlisted in Co C 89th Indiana Volunteers, where he served three years. While in the service, he received a gun shot which passed entirely through his body which in after life caused him much suffering and was indirectly the cause of his death. At the close of the war, he returned to Wells county, Ind where he was united in marriage with Miss Minerva Hammond. To this union were born four children, all of whom are living and are residents of this city. In early life he was converted and united with the Baptist church, but in later years identified himself with First Christian church of this city, where he remained a constant member until his death. Mr Barton endured his long period of suffering with Christian fortitude and was willing at all times to bow in humble submission to the great inevitable. In the last days of his sickness he expressed himself as being ready and willing to give up this life for life eternal. His long life of usefulness was brought to a close October 6, 1907 aged 74y 4m 9d. He is survived by a loving wife, six children, fifteen grand children, one stepson, together with a wide circle of friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at the residence on West Green Street, Oct, 8, 1907, interment in the Woodlawn cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev Hackleman, assisted by the G A R of which he was a member.
