From The Daily Tribune of Friday
Susan Leeper.

Susan Leeper, widow of Samuel Leeper, Sr., mother of the late Hon. David Rohrer Leeper, is dead, the well know woman passing away at the Leeper homestead on Leeper avenue at 7 o'clock last night, after an illness of exactly 10 weeks with typhoid malaria. She was 69 years old. The arrangements for the funeral have not been complete but the services will be held at the residence, on Leeper avenue at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon and Dr. D. M. Wood, pastor of the Grace Methodist church will probably be one of the officiating clergymen. The burial will be in the Rohrer cemetery, south of the city.

Mrs. Leeper was one of the most distinguished pioneer residents of South Bend and St. Joseph county, she being a woman of noble traits and lofty sentiments. No person ever left her home hungry; the sick man never missed her skilled nursing and all who knew her personally or by name had naught but kind words to utter in her behalf. Susan Leeper was one of those few women who invaded the wilderness and remained there until she saw the forest give way to a great city and in her last years it was a comfort to her to know that she had a hand in rearing one of the greatest cities of the west, for she was closely identified with the growth of South Bend.

Susan Leeper was born June 16, 1832, in Starke county, Pa. In 1846 at the age of 14, she accompanied her parents to Indiana and with them settled in South Bend. In 1860 age was married to Samuel Leeper and went with him to Ohio. Three years later, Mr. and Mrs. Leeper returned to this county and settled on what is now known as the Rohrer farm, three miles south of the city on the Turkey Creek road. After living there for two years, they moved to a point one mile west of the city and then took up their residence on the Leeper farm north of South Bend. There she lived until her death, a period of 31 years. Mrs. Leeper was the mother of two children, the late Mrs. James Reed and Samuel Leeper. Those who survived her. She was a member of the Methodist church, joining that church almost 49 years ago.
