John was born the second of six children of James A. Marlin & Eliza Musselman. His father James was born in 1821 or 1822, in either Nova Scotia or Northampton County, Pennsylvania the descendant of Scots-Irish immigrants. James died in either Philadelphia or Northampton County sometime between 1859 and June 1860, as he is not found in the 1860 census.

John married Mary Ann Harrop sometime between 1873-74, most likely in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He held various jobs over the years but was mostly a day laborer. Also lived at various addresses in Philadelphia and even lived in Camden, NJ at 200 Senate Street, in the early 1890's, before returning to Philadelphia. Some of his Harrop in-laws lived in Camden at the time.

On May 17, 1906, John committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid. His body was found on the railroad embankment across the street from where he lived at 6815 Regent Street, Philadelphia.
