Sr. Elizabeth Rita Rhodes, RSM, a Sister of Mercy, died at Notre Dame Hospice, New Orleans, January 13, 2012. Sister was born on December 19, 1924 in New Orleans, LA to Daniel and Rita McGittigan Rhodes. Sr. Elizabeth entered the Sisters of Mercy in Webster Groves, MO on 9/5/41 and made her final profession 8/16/47. Sr. Elizabeth received a BS in Elementary Education and a Masters in Education (Administration) at Loyola University, New Orleans. With the exception of two years in Slaton, TX, Sr. Elizabeth spent her total ministry in education in Louisiana, serving at St. Joseph's School in Jeanerette, LA, and in New Orleans at St. Alphonsus School, St. Francis Xavier and Holy Name of Jesus. Sr. Elizabeth completed a total of 39 years as teacher, principal and development director at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, LA, in 2005. Sr. Elizabeth was director of the Mercy Associates in New Orleans. Sr. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Daniel, her sister Dorothy Morris, survived by her brother-in-law Thomas Morris and nieces and nephews: Patricia, Susan, Thomas, Harold Danny and Gerry, sister Anna Schultz (Herbert) and nieces and nephews: Herbert, Ann Manger, Sharon and Michael and the Sisters of Mercy. A wake will held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave. at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Donald Hawkins, S.J. will officiate at the funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. with burial in St. Patrick Cemetery #3 in New Orleans, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy - Louisiana Ministry Fund, 6028 Freret Street, New Orleans, LA 70118.
