Passing of a Civil War Veteran.

E. A. Donaldson, a veteran of the civil war, passed away at his home on the south side Thursday evening, Setpember 17. Mr. Donaldson had been ailing for several weeks, being confined to his home most of the time. He was talking to his wife a few minutes before he passed away, death coming suddenly.

Mr. Donaldson was one of the five remaining members of the U.S. Grant post G.A.R. of Avoca, Iowa.

Egbert B. Donaldson was born at Pleasant Valley, Iowa, on June 27, 1844 and passed peacefully away on Thursday, September 17, 1925, at 6:15 p.m. at the age of 81 years, two months and twenty days.

He came to Avoca in the year 1880. On February 22, 1880 he was united in marriage to Matilda M. M. Hass. To this union was born seven children, of which one passed away in infancy. The six surviving children are: Oliver and Bud of Avoca, Iowa; Tip, of Hancock, Iowa; Seth, of Green River, Wyo.; and Mrs. Earl McConnell of Avoca, Iowa; and Mrs. Fred Pickerill, also three children by a former marriage: Mrs. Miles Mitchell of Haxtum, Colorado; George of Binford, Wyo.; and Mrs. Estelle Stephenson of Rinard, Iowa. Nineteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother, Peter A. Donaldson, of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive him.

During the civil war Mr. Donaldson served three years (1861-65) with the 20th Iowa Infantry, Company "K". He was a member of the U.S. Grant post of the G.A.R. and one of the oldest members of the First Congregational church of Avoca.

Funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev. Essig, Sunday, September 20, at 2:30 p.m. Interment was made at the Avoca cemetery with full military honors, where a firing squad of World War veterans fired the last salute.
