O.B. was a son of Oscar Braden Brown and Ethel Mae Bale. His mother Ethel died from pneumonia when O.B. was one year old. At that time, O.B. went to live with his father's sister, Celia Brown, and her husband, Mack Thompson, at Phalba in Van Zandt County, Texas. Celia and Mack raised O.B. as their own child, and he assumed the surname Thompson. He attended high school in Canton and excelled in his classes and sports. Mack was very active in 4-H where he received many awards. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

O.B. joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked at the camp at White Rock Lake in Dallas. On June 21, 1941, he was tragically killed in a machine accident at the lake. He was only 20 years old.

O.B. was the youngest of six children. His siblings were: Dennis E. Brown, Mack Stanfield Brown, Pauline Katherine Brown Sparks, Lorena Mae Brown Bateman, and Harry Braden Brown. He had a half sister, Maggie Louise Brown Pipes and a step sister, Pauline (Paula) Turner Harris, and a step brother, Connie L. (C.L.) Turner.
