Julius first came to Cleveland, Ohio for the body of his brother, Benjamin Cleveland and liking the city, he returned there to live. He found employment through a cousin, H. G. Cleveland. He traveled for many years for a paper and cordage firm and was with the American Cordage Company in later life.
