Dorothy "Jewel" Colvin was born April 13, 1916, in Portland, Oregon. She was the second of eight children born to Walter Roy and Jennie Loretta (Curtis) Colvin. She grew up on her father's farm in Aurora, Oregon, and spent many fun summers at her family's Pudding River Camp Ground. As a youngster, she also enjoyed spending overnight stays with her great aunt Lizzie (Henderson) Tandy in Marshland, Oregon, and remained close to Lizzie throughout her life.
After graduating from Canby High School in 1934, Jewel found work as a live-in housekeeper. She still often spent summer days at the camp ground, and it was here she met Stuart Brokenshire. Stuart's family was one of the many who would come to the picnic resort, set up tents and stay for the weekend or longer. Jewel and Stuart were married on May 4, 1939, at the Episcopal Church in Vancouver, Washington. They honeymooned for a week in a Newport cottage along the Oregon coast, but then because they didn't have a house of their own, Stuart went back to his parents' home to live and Jewel returned to her employer's house.
Eventually Stuart and Jewel were able to buy a house in the Ardenwald neighborhood of Milwaukie, Oregon. While living in this home, their three children were born: Charles in 1941; Diane in 1947; and Norman in 1950. Around 1952, they bought a home on SE 56th in Portland, and lived there until November of 1965, then bought a house on Scholls where they lived until Stuart retired in 1975. (In 1976, they returned to Portland for a 9-month stay while Stuart worked for Tektronics to fulfill requirements for his National United Association pension.)
Stuart and Jewel were always active in sailing and belonged to Northwest Outboard Trailer Sailors from 1958 to 1975. In 1969 they received the "Boating Family of the Year" trophy. They were also members of the Hayden Island Yacht Club. Jewel was a long-time member of the Lady Pilots, a women's boating group.
In 1975, Stuart and Jewel built a lovely home at Port Ludlow where they were both able to enjoy their passions of boating and gardening. They belonged to the Northwest Outboard Trailer Sailors as well as the Port Ludlow Yacht Club from 1976 to 1992. Jewel was a member of the Olympic Gardeners in which she enjoyed showing her flowers. She was also a member of National Rhododendron Society.
In 1997, as Stuart's health began to fail, they made the decision to return to Portland where they briefly lived in King's City, then moving to a mobile home park in SE Foster, Portland. Stuart passed away in January 1998. Jewel remained active, enjoying her flowers and visiting family. On one of these family outings, she became reacquainted with an old friend, Bill Jeskey, who was the brother of her aunt Dorothy Colvin. Bill and Jewel were married March 11, 2000 in Woodburn, Oregon
Bill had lived in Aurora, Oregon, then, in 1981, bought a place in Otis, Oregon, along the Salmon River. Jewel moved to Otis where they lived until Bill's health began to fail. They then moved to Jewel's home on Foster and eventually moved to the Cascade Park Retirement Center in Woodburn, Oregon. Although, they had a small apartment, Jewel continued her love of growing lilies and other flowers by using the center's community garden.
After Bill died in December of 2006, Jewel continued to make her home at the Retirement Center until the latter months of her life when she moved to the Avamere Memory Care Center in Newberg, Oregon. She passed away June 14, 2011, in Newberg.
Jewel will be remembered by all her family for her keen love of flowers, camping, sailing and family history. She had award-winning lilies and rhododendrons and specialized in collecting wild flowers which she transplanted into her own gardens. She had a wonderful collection of family photos documenting her adventure-filled life.
