SARAH AND MARTHA WERE BORN IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, ILLINOIS ALL OF THE OTHER CHILDREN WERE BORN IN STEPHENS COUNTY, TEXAS. In 1888 Sarah was killed by lightning while sitting on the side of an iron bed inside their farm house during a severe thunder storm in Stevens County, Texas.
When this happened her husband, John, was sitting on the other side of the bed and was knocked unconscious and also had some burns. Grace, their 2 year old daughter was in the middle of the bed and sustained some burns. Just before the strike, Sarah had called out to her oldest daughter,Isabella, who was in an adjoining room, if she had put her saddle away since it was beginning to storm and rain.
