Sam N. Allred, 96 years young, passed away February 9, 2004, in Austin.

He was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on January 22, 1908.

In 1921, thirteen year old Sam moved with his mother and father and six siblings to Texas. They settled in the ''country' on land south of downtown Austin that is now Ben White Blvd. Sam lived his entire life within a 3-5 mile radius from that spot. Sam always had a bright smile and was known as a very upbeat, pleasant person who loved people. An avid hunter and fisherman, he had more stories of the ''big one' than anyone in town. Sam was elected County Commissioner in 1942 and served the people of Travis County for 10 years. He later opened Capitol Radio & Television on South Congress and continued in the television business for 30 years. He leaves many friends, including two of his closest - Gary Pounds and Gaylord Skinner. The family is very appreciative of their love, friendship and concern for Sam. Special thanks to the staff at Stonebridge Health Center for the loving care given to Sam.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Viola Prather Allred.

He is survived by his daughter, Pat Allred Angeli; son, Sammy Allred and wife, Karen; four grandchildren, Randy Lowcock and wife, Diana of Mineola, Ford Lowcock and wife, Josie of Los Angeles, Steve Angeli and wife, Kim of Austin, and Alison Allred Hadidi and husband, Moog of Austin. Seven great-grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2004, at Harrell Funeral Home in South Austin with Dr. Gerald Mann officiating.

Graveside services will follow at Forest Oaks Memorial Park under the auspices of Onion Creek Masonic Lodge #220 AF & FM.

Pallbearers will be Steve Angeli, Randy Lowcock, Ford Lowcock, Gaylord Skinner, Gary Pounds and Bill Shaw. Honorary Pallbearer will be Wilbert Klingeman.
