Jane Cater was the daughter of George Cater Sr. and Mary D. Moore. She came from Maryland to Somerton, Belmont County, Ohio with her parents in 1824.
Jane married Nathan Lewis Wharton on Jan. 10, 1839 in Belmont County, Ohio. They had 7 children: Dr. William Hopper Wharton, George Lewis Wharton, James Allen Wharton, Phebe Ann Wharton, Francis Ashbury Wharton, Violet E. Whaton, Amanda Jane Wharton.
Her sister Sarah Ann Cater married Samuel Wharton and her brother William Josiah Cater married Phoebe Ann Wharton.
