Alta was born in Blackfoot, Bingham County, Idaho; her father was Joseph Bergantz, born in France. He was an attorney for the Blackfoot Judicial District and died in Idaho in 1895. At some point he apparently changed his last name to Miller.
Alta's mother was Ella nee Ray, an osteopathic physician. After Alta's father died, her mother married a fellow osteopath, George Hickman Gilmour; he adopted all three of Ella's children including Alta's brothers Ray (who also became an osteopath) and Howard. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa where Alta was graduated from high school.
Alta married Dr. Roy Terwilliger Quick in 1908; he was a physician and later specialized in ear, nose and throat. It was while living in Frederick, Oklahoma that Alta had her only child, Roy Jr. They moved back to her hometown and eventually divorced around 1925. Following the death of her mother in 1936, Alta moved to Los Angeles to find work. Meanwhile, her son also became an osteopathic physician and moved first to the east coast, living in Florida and Georgia. Alta joined him, and died in DeKalb County, Georgia and is buried next to her son.
