Martha Farmer Brewer, wife of the 47th governor of Alabama, Albert P. Brewer, died at her home on November 14, 2006. She was born in Anniston and grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn. She and Al, as she affectionately called him, met at the University of Alabama when both were students there. They were married almost 56 years ago in Chattanooga and after college settled in Decatur where Albert began his law practice. Martha was a homemaker devoted to her family. In Decatur, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Decatur Junior Service League and the Decatur Cotillion Club.

She was a gracious and lovely first lady of our state who brought dignity and honor to her position. When Alabama celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 1969, she compiled and edited “The First Lady’s Cookbook” which sold over 15,000 copies with the proceeds going to pay the costs of the observance. The book is a collector's item today. To recognize Alabama’s first ladies who had resided in the governor’s mansion, she made one of the parlors the First Ladies’ Parlor and had paintings of each of the first ladies hung in that parlor. The parlor continues to exhibit the portraits of these distinguished ladies.

Surviving her are her husband of almost 56 years, Albert P. Brewer; two daughters, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Cooper.

After a private family burial, a memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at Mountain Brook Baptist Church today at 10 a.m. with Dr. James D. Moebes and Dr. William E. Hull officiating. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the church’s Hudson Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to two of Martha’s favorite entities, Big Oak Ranch, P.O. Box 507, Springville, AL 35146 and the Martha F. Brewer Scholarship Fund at Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229.

Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood.
