Stephen Columbus Ketchie was born on 19 August 1845 in the Providence Township region of Rowan County to John Henry Ketchie and Rosa Ann "Polly" Ketchie (née Fraley). He was one of twins born that day (the other is Ben Ketchie #85233806). Stephen weighed a mere 1.5 pounds at birth, and the midwife placed him in a quart jar to keep him warm. His mother died during their childbirth, and his father passed away in 1847. Thereafter, the family was broken up and sent to live with various friends and relatives.

Stephen enlisted in Kinston, NC, in Company A, 42d Regiment, North Carolina Infantry on 20 October 1863, just 10 days after his twin brother Ben joined this same unit. By 30 April 1864, he was assigned as a fifer. He was paroled in Greensboro on 02 May 1865. On 14 June 1865, he signed the Office of the Provost Marshall oath as living in Sullivan County, Tennessee, prior to his enlistment.

01 February 1866, married Martha Melinda Smith in Rowan County. They settled on a farm near East Spencer, Rowan County, where Stephen would serve more than 15 terms on the town council. In April 1909, he was reunited with his three brothers, Ben, David, and Lewis, for the first time in their adult lives, since they had been separated following their parents' deaths.
