Irene was born to Eno and Mary M. (__) Vermillion. Her family had moved from Illinois to Sanborn County, South Dakota, where Irene was born, and then to Holabird, Hyde County, South Dakota.

She married Henry Aasby on January 17, 1925, at Mitchell, South Dakota. They became the parents of their only child, a son, Harold, born in November 1925.

In 1928, when Henry's parents retired and moved into Highmore, Henry & Irene took over the home place, where he had always farmed with his father. Irene raised turkeys each year, and preserved vegetables from her garden for winter use. She was president of the first extension club organized in Loomis Township. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Henry and Irene retired from farming in 1963, built a new home and moved to Highmore. They did much traveling, visiting Mexico, Canada, and all but 3 states. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 17, 1975.
