She was born on Feb. 16, 1916, in Pike River, Minn., to John and Alina (Saarela) Aysta. She graduated from the Virginia High School. She was united in marriage to Leonard O. Walkki on Sept. 24, 1948 in Virginia. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Cherry. She was a cook at the Cherry Public School for 12 years. The couple moved to Mountain Iron in 1988 and later to the Laurentian Manor in Virginia. Leonard preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 2000. She was s also previously married to Chester A. Mattson, who died in 1945 in World War II in Okinawa.
She was a member of the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church. She loved to bake and cook, along with her other hobbies of crocheting, reading, and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Barbara (Rev. James) Foster Tribble; two granddaughters: Nicole Foster, and Natalie (Timothy) Payne; a great-grandson; niece, Janet Horoshak; three nephews: Gary, Jon, and Paul Aysta; close cousin, Nancy Roskoski; sister-in-law, Eleanor Aysta; and other cousins and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and one brother, Melvin Aysta.
