Leonard Lee "Dick" Jones was born in Hale Center, Texas on October 23, 1916 and passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010. He was one of five children born to Carl Aaron and Dora Elsie Thornton Jones. Dick came to Midland in 1935 and worked for the late George Friday. During World War II, he spent two years at a civil service job at Midland Air Base. In 1944 he opened Jones Boot Shop on Main Street in Midland and later moved to Missouri Street until his retirement in 1989. He made boots for Western movie stars, politicians, many west Texans and cowboys all over the world. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy Lloyd "Buck" Jones and Fred B. Jones. He married Lola Mae Newton in June 1937 and lost her in May 2003. He is survived by his daughters, Sylvia Ann Nugent and Linda Richmond and husband Albert "Abe" Richmond of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Lola Pearl Smith of Oceanside, California and Louveta Ivey of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Linda Basham and the Midland Hospice staff, Maria Adame, Mary Alice Burns and many caring people. A graveside service will be held today at 11:00 am at Resthaven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please remember Hospice of Midland, P.O. Box 2621, Midland, Texas 79702. Graveside services are under the direction of Lewallen-Garcia-Pipkin Funeral Home.
