CREWS FIND BODY OF RIVER VICTIM
Published: The Charleston Gazette, Monday, July 31, 1950
The body of Opal Giles (Pete) Keistar, 1502 1/2 Fourth Avenue, was recovered from Kanawha River yesterday, approximately 18 hours after he plunged from a leaky boat and attempted to swim to shore.
City firemen said the 48-year-old victim's body was located with grappling hooks at 3 p.m. near the foot of 50th Street in Kanawha City.
City police quoted a witness that Keister was in the boat with another companion about 8 p.m. Saturday when the boat sprang a leak.
Keister disappeared beneath the surface as he swam towards the shore. Police said a pair of heavy shoes, which Keister wore at the time, is believed to have caused him to go under.
Keister, an employee of Bell Lines, Inc., is survived by his wife, Arcel Gay; one son, Robert Lee; two daughters, Barbara Joy and Nelda Diane; his father, Ace of Cox Mills; four brothers, Ronzil of California, Argil of Washington, D.C., Willis of Akron, Ohio, and Carl of Texas; five sisters, Mrs. Lessie Adams, Mrs. Audie Stout of Cox Mills, Mildred Keister of Oklahoma, Mrs. Wilma Parkhurst of Borger, Texas and Virgie Keister of Charleston.
The body will remain at Cunningham mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements.
