Walter P. Madeira was the fourth of five children born to John Watts Madera and Willeymene Colebank.

On June 30, 1891, he married Minna M. Mahler.

They had two children together:

Irene Elizabeth Madeira (1894-1968)

William Bernard Madeira (1897-1973)

Walter and his younger brother Bernard were proprietors of the Hotel Madeira in downtown Morgantown. It was located at the corner of Chestnut and Walnut streets where the Monongalia County Courthouse/clerk's office currently sits. At some point later, the Hotel Madeira became the Hotel Franklin.

Walter and his brother Bernard also owned and operated Madeira Brothers store, a stationery and confectionery store on High Street in downtown Morgantown where Roger's Pharmacy would later be.

Walter and his brother Bernard were the first business in town to have a soda fountain. They were also the first to bring the Pittsburgh newspapers to Morgantown.
