Spurgeon Holmes Protzman was the fifth of eleven children born to William Irvin Protzman and Anna Gans.

In 1883, He married Minnie Vanona Jackson. They had six children together.

Spurgeon was a teacher in the public schools of Monongalia County, West Virginia for about three years. He studied for the ministry and became an ordained Baptist Minister. His first church was at Glen Easton, Pennsylvania and from 1895 to 1897 he was a Chaplin at the State Penitentiary in Moundsville, West Virginia. - John Ashburn
