Miss Siddie Joe Johnson, 71 former head librarian at La Retama Public Library, died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness.

Miss Johnson, author of several children's books, was librarian here from 1934 to 1937 when she moved to Dallas where she was associated with the Dallas Public Library until her retirement in 1965.

She resided at 4234 Cambridge.

Surviving is a brother, H. Gilliam Johnson of Corpus Christi.

Miss Siddie Joe Johnson, 71, 4234 Cambridge, died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital after a long illness.

She was a former longtime resident of Dallas where she retired as a coordinator of children and young people's books for the Dallas Public Library System. She had also written several children's books and books of poetry. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral in Dallas. She was a member of St. Theresa's Guild and an associate member of the Community of St. Mary's. She as also a member of the Texas and National Libraries Association. She formerly wrote a book review for the Dallas Morning News.

Miss Johnson was awarded the Poetry Society of Texas and Siddie Joe Johnson Award. (This award was presented for the first time at the National Library Association Consortium in April, 1977.) She was the author of these children's books: DEBBY (1940); TEXAS: THE LAND OF THE TEJAS (1943); SUSAN'S YEAR; BOOK OF POEMS (1945). She was a regular writer for the Dallas papers and reviewed children's books. She was a Dallas children's librarian and taught Children's Literature at SMU for a number of years.

Survivors include one brother, H. Gilliam Johnson, Corpus Christi; one aunt, Mrs. Mabel Woods, Dennison [sic], Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the All Saints Episcopal Church, with Rev. Earl McArthur, officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
