Frank A. Beach: - June 17, 1988

A memorial service will be scheduled for Frank A. Beach, 77, a pioneer in animal behavior research and professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley.

He died Wednesday from congestive heart failure at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, Professor Beach was the recipient of many honors and awards, including the American Psychological Association's Warren Medal. He was a highly acclaimed researcher in the fields of behavioral endocrinology and animal behavior for more than four decades.

Professor Beach joined the faculty of UC Berkeley in 1958 and attained emeritus status in 1978. He remained actively involved in research, teaching and writing after that.

He is survived by his wife, Noel, of El Cerrito; a daughter, Susan Bennion of South San Francisco; a son, Frank A. Beach III of Costa Mesa; a sister, Barbara Dewey of Boulder, Colo., and two grandchildren.

His first wife, Anna Beth Odenweller, died 17 years ago.
