Ervin was a direct descendent of William Leffingwell and Eunice Leffingwell, his great-great-grandparents, who were founding pioneers of Cambria.
Ervin was a fifth generation rancher in Cambria and his grandfather, Amos J. Smithers, was president of the Bank of Cambria.
He married Jane Reeve Smithers in 1959 and helped raise her four children, who survive him, Jane Alexander, Moira Doyle, Eric Doyle, and Laurance Doyle, and grandson, Lon Alexander.
Ervin was a member of the Cambria chapter of the Odd Fellows Lodge for 70 years, having served as Noble Grand many times.
Mr. Smithers is survived by two sisters, Althea Soto and Shirley Blanc.
