Bonnie Mae Collins, 96, of Clarksburg, WV (formerly Doddridge County), died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, WV.
She was born June 9, 1915, on Frank's Run (Doddridge County), a daughter of the late Lafayette Starkey and Mary Alice (Snodgrass) Starkey. She was a homemaker. She was a storyteller, poet, song wrighter, and published author. After graduating from Tyler County High School in 1935, she did a post-graduate course in journalism. She was active in the McClellan Homemakers Club. Her other community activities includeed time as a 4-H advisor, 4-H All-Star member, Foster Grandparent in the Doddridge County Schools, as well as a school cook and Sunday Scjool teacher. She was also a Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star and arrended Christian Church at Center Point.
She received the following awards; West Virginia Distinguished Citizen from Gov. Rockefeller in 1980, the Vandalia Award in 1990, and the Good Samaritan Award in 1995. She represented Appalachian Culture in 2003 at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Her last award was in 2008 when she won the Remember Me Award, representing Clarksburg Nursing and Rehab.
She was a published author, having co-authored a children's book, Rocks in my Pocket, and was published in Goldenseal.
Surviving are four children, Thomas A. (Janet) of Ashley, WV, Linda Mitchell (Bob Slicker) of Sugarcreek, Ohio, Barbara Davis of West Milford, WV, and Sandra Garrison (Robert) of Buckhannon, WV; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Archie C. Collins; four sisters and eight brothers.
Services were Tuesday, Aug. 9th, at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro. Interment followed at Center Point Christian Church Cemetery, Doddridge County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Point Christian Church.
