Mayor K E Lumsden of Canso Mourned;
Aged 41 Years:

Canso, Although he had been seriously ill for some months and only recently had returned from the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, the sudden passing on Thursday, June 17, about 11 pm, of Kenneth E Lumsden, Mayor of Canso for the past several years, came as a shock to his family and the citizens of Canso as a whole.

The late Mayor Lumsden, who was 41 years of age, was the local agent of the Imperial Oil Co, the proprietor of the Canso Garage, and the Canso-Antigonish daily bus service.
He had been prominent in the business and civic affairs of Canso for a number of years being at the time of his death Chairman of the School Board, an Executive member of the Board of Trade, and Vice-president of the Canso curling Club.

Surviving besides his widow, the former Bertha Meagher of this town, and six children, Paul, Elaine, Anne Marie, Barbara, Maureen, and Karen, all at home; his parents, Mr and Mrs Ernest Lumsden, Canso;one sister, Beatrice (Mrs Davis) of Venice, California; and three brothers, Ronald, Elliot and Russell, all of Canso.

The funeral, which was very largely attended,was held on Monday morning with requiem high mass at the Star of the Sea Church at 10 am. Most Rev M E McLaughlin, PP officiating, assisted by Rev Father Power of Port Felix.

The hours from 8 am to 12 noon had been declared a period of mourning by the Town Council and business places were closed for those hours.

The students of Canso School from Grade VII up and Grade IV,
attended the funeral procession in a body.

D. MacDonnell of Antigonish represented the union of NS Municipalities at the funeral.

Pallbearers were Acting mayor, Walter McNeary, Ed. Richard, James Fogarty, George Lewis,Harry Rattray, and Gordon Munroe.
