Herman was the son of Frederick and Sophia (Beckman) Dreier. His father was a farmer in Germany, and died there at age 67, his mother dying at the age of 65. They were the parents of the following children: Henry, who remained in Germany; John of Chicago; Herman; Fred, a merchant of Havana, IL; Dora, who died in Germany; Margery, of Radcliffe, Hardin County, IA; Mary, who died in Chicago; Mena of Minnesota; and Sophia who died in Germany.

Other child: Marie I. Dreier Faris (2-11-1882 IA to 4-6-1970 Hidalgo Co., TX), divorced from Preston H. Faris (1881-1953)
