Final Rites Today For Anita Oldham
Funeral services were held this morning at Chalfant-Perry funeral home in Fort Wayne for Mrs. H.J. (Anita Swearingen) Oldham, former Decatur resident, who died Friday night at the Cleveland Clinic hospital. A second service was held this afternoon in the chapel of the Washington Park cemetery near Cumberland.
After receiving her A.M. and M.A. degrees from Indiana University, she started her teaching career at Knightstown. In 1940 she was elected president of the Indiana state teachers of speech an organization of 700, and in 1946 was named president of the Indiana state teachers association. As a member of the state curriculum committee she helped write Indiana's first complete course of study in English. She later contributed a chapter in Matilda Bailey's English Fourth Course.
Mrs. Oldham taught English at Elmhurst high school from 1947 until 1954, when she taught at Indiana Technical College with the rank of associate professor. One of her leading community contributions was deputy chief warden of Allen county civil defense, 1954-1958, which led to her appointment of the nation advisory committee of the women's federal civic defense program.
Mrs. Oldham was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Sigma Kappa college sorority, for which she was regional director, Delta Kappa Gamma, which she served as president, Y.M.C.A., Fort Wayne Woman's club, of which she was regional director.
