Born in Shelby County, Texas, to Bertha Camelia Bush and Hartwell D. "Bud" Adams, Sr., both brothers Hartwell, Jr., and Joe Ward also served in the Navy during WW II. Three sisters, Eureka, Avis Audrey, and Iva Jane.
On July 1, 1941, John registered for the Selective Service peacetime draft in Center, Texas. At the time, he was employed as a sawmill laborer for C. H. Covington. He stood five feet, seven inches tall, weighed 130 pounds, and had gray eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion. He was married to Johnnie Frances Crocker.
John was inducted into the armed forces on September 27, 1944 and was assigned to his preference of the US Navy. He was then sent to the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California, for six weeks of "boot camp," followed by duty in the Marshall Islands between Hawaii and the Philippines. World War II ended on September 2, 1945, and John was returned to the United States and honorably discharged on February 23, 1946. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Following the war, he and Johnnie raised three children, Mary Kathryn, Barbara Sue, John Marlin, Jr., and Jan. He passed at the early age of 35 at his residence in Center, Texas of a heart attack. He and Johnnie rest in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Shelby County, Texas. Day is done, God is nigh.
