Civil War veteran - Co. D 117th. New York Infantry 1862-1864. Discharged for promotion to 2nd. Lt. Co. E 38th. Regiment U.S.C.T.
Discharged 1865.
Came from a family of long lived soldiers. His father David Ames fought in the War of 1812, and died at the age of 101, and his grandfather Nathianiel Ames fought in the Revolutionary War, and died at the age of 103.
He was a well known veteran of Utica.
