Obituary from The Middletown Press, Middletown, CT, May 27, 1986:

Deep River Man Lost
In Boating Accident

DEEP RIVER--Robert H. Towle, 40, of 30 Winter Ave., was lost overboard and presumed drowned in a boating accident off Long Island last Thursday.

The U.S. Coast Guard searched the area where he was lost, about 100 miles off Montauk Point. A spokesman for the Coast Guard said the search has been called off pending any new evidence.

Towle was a commercial fisherman in the area for the last 10 years. A Deep River resident for six years, he served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Vietnam.

He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Bender of Virginia Beach, Va., a sister Ruth Towle, and a son Robert Piadella. He was engaged to marry Kathleen Denette of Deep River. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

NOTE: Although the news story about his disappearance says Bob was a medic in Vietnam, I think that's an error. His Military Occupational Specialty ("MOS") in the Army was Information Specialist (journalism). He did see combat in the field in Vietnam in 1967, but, neither in letters from Vietnam nor in person afterwards did he ever mention to me serving as a medic, and it's not likely that, without training as a medic, he ever could have been assigned to temporary duty as a medic. -- Jay Wright
