Harland G. Bond, 81, a
longtime Coldwater area
educator, died Monday at
Bronson Methodist Hospital
in Kalamazoo. He had been
in poor health since December.
Bond was born May 30,
1907 in Cass City son of
Mark and Clara Belle Bond.
He married the former
Thelma Agar Dec. 31,1928
in Royal Oak.
He received a bachelor
degree in music from the
University of Michigan in
1931 and Master of Arts
degree from U-M in 1940.
He began his career as an
educator in 1931 as supervisor
of music in the public
schools of Ottawa County,
Ohio. In 1936 he moved to
Louisville, Ky where he
became director of instrumental
music at Highland
Junior High and Atherton
Senior High Schools.
He moved to Coldwater in
1939, and served as director
of bands for 14 years. He left
the Coldwater school system
in 1953, and spent part
of his time with the former
Music Mart of Coldwater,
and as orchestra director in
the Senior High School of
Angola, Ind.
From 1954 to 1970 he was
a member of the education
staff of the Bronson Public
Schools. During these years
he served in numerous departments,
such as director of bands and chorus,
principal of the elementary
schools, and finally with the
staff in the middle school,
teaching social studies and
math. He retired in 1970.
Bond made major contributions
to community music
affairs in all areas where he
served. He was a member of
the Branch County Teachers
association, and was a past
president of District IV,
Michigan School Band and
Orchestra Association, and
former vice-president of the
same state organization. He
was also a member or
AARP, Coldwater Country
Club, and since 1942 he was
a member of the Elks Lodge
No. 1023 BPOE. He also
attended the First Presbyterian
Church, where he sang
in choir.
He is survived by his wife,
a daughter, Mrs. Ross (Harlem)
VanNess of Muncie,
IN 3 grandchildren, and 2
great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by a
brother, Darcy Bond.
Funeral services were held
at the Putnam Funeral Home
in Coldwater, with Rev. Dr
James C. Troust officiating.
Burial was in Knauss Cemetery
