Lewis Johnson enlisted in the 119th US Colored Infantry regiment, Company B, on January 18, 1865 in Lexington. His enlistment record stated that he was born in Caroline County, Virginia and that he was 36 years of age. His residence at the time of enlistment was credited to Clark County, Kentucky. He was recorded as a free man at the time of enlistment in the enlistment register.


He was assigned duty as a teamster. He was promoted to Corporal on the day he enlisted. He died April 6, 1865 in Lexington of inflammation of the brain, while he was in the service. That he is the Lewis Johnson buried in this grave is confirmed by the interment register for the Lexington National Cemetery.
