He was assigned duty as a teamster. He was promoted to Corporal on the day he enlisted. He died April 6, 1865 in Lexington of inflammation of the brain, while he was in the service. That he is the Lewis Johnson buried in this grave is confirmed by the interment register for the Lexington National Cemetery.
