Diane's father was Lawrence B. Fagerland (1916-1996) and her mother was Clare Mansfield (1917-2013). On 13 Feb 1942 they married in Seattle, Washington. Clare was a daughter of George Mansfield and Marie Krum, and was born 12 July 1917 in Whitman, Washington. Both Clare and Lawrence Fagerland were buried at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Columbarium, in Kennewick, WA.

Clare and Lawrence had two daughters – Betty, and Diane Clare. Diane, was often known as Diane, and went by this name throughout her schooling years in Kennewick. She was a member of many groups while in high school- and was a song leader for the cheerleading team in 1972, and was in the honor society at Kennewick High school. In 1971, she was a participant of the High School Homecoming Court – which included members of all four of our high school class loads. During her high school years, she dated one guy.

Friends talk about the sextet that Diane was in during her high school years. Some of the members talked about the song they did when they wore German shorts with suspenders. It may have been called "The Happy Wanderer" and was wonderful.
Diane had a beautiful free alto voice. She was beautiful inside and out and a sweet personality. Diane was a cutie and so sweet. Lots of memories. Diane and her sister Betty both played the piano beautifully and were very talented.

Diane was a master of languages also, and began to learn Norwegian, Sweden, German and some French. She graduated with honors from high school and attended University of Washington. She became a foreign exchange student in Oslo, Norway and loved being there and learning more. After graduation of Cum Laude from the U of W with a degree in Norwegian, she became an employee of Levi Straus Company in San Francisco, California. Then after a while, she was transferred back to Norway with the Levi company. She was happy to be assigned this transfer! Diane began training others at Levi in Norway on the computer system with training in Norsk. After another year in Norway, Diane was transferred again to the London, England office. But she had just transferred and moved in to her London place when she began to feel ill.

The illness came on fast. Diane found out she had a rare virus that was from Russian origin, and it was killing the young and the very old and it was much more serious than she thought.

A friend of mine said: I got a letter from her just after she got ill but before she passed away, and thankfully I kept it. In the letter she said she thought she had tonsillitis. But when she was hospitalized, she learned it was much more serious.

Diane fell into a coma and then all of her organs began to shut down. Diane's parents, Clare and Lawrence Fagerland, and sister Betty, were notified on a Sunday and they had to get their passports out of the bank box where her mother worked. Clare called her boss and he went to the bank to let them in that Sunday. The family was able to take the first flight to Seattle and on to London. Thankfully, they arrived just in time at the hospital to see Diane. They were able to spend a few hours with Diane before she passed. But Diane was in a comatose state when they saw her. Betty (her sister) told me that they thought she was able to hear them because tears rolled down her cheeks when they held her hand and talked to her. (I do believe this happens and they are able to hear loved ones, as my father had tears coming down his eyes and not able to speak to us). But Diane never gained consciousness fully.

Diane turned 25 years just a few days after she died.

My friend is trying to get copies of the Fagerland photos from Betty's son (Betty sister of Diane), as she knows him well. He would have all of them if he kept them, as there are not any other family members living close to Diane and Betty now. Will let you know if we receive any new photos.

From Mayflower Desc who has some knowledge from Diane's KHS activities and beyond-

Diane was a beautiful young and very vibrant lady. Her interest in foreign language and her great academic achievements afforded her the opportunity to further her studies in Europe, benefitting from an undergraduate scholarship from the Rotary Foundation.
After she graduated from U of W, she recruited by Levi Strauss International, and took a job in San Francisco where she was trained as a computer systems instructor.

Her ability to speak so many languages fluently enabled Diane to travel extensively with the company, which brought her to her last assignment. She arrived in London to begin working after completing a holiday vacation. She was very run down and thought she had an acute case of tonsillitis. It turned out that she had contracted a rare virus which had migrated to England from Russia. This particular virus preyed on the very young, very old, and those in a weakened condition.

Diane was hospitalized at Western Hospital which specialized in the treatment of rare diseases, and as she was being transferred to Charing Cross Hospital in London, she suffered cardiac arrest in route.

Her parents, Larry and Clare Fagerland, and her sister, Betty, flew to her side, yet she never regained consciousness. Diane died on May 2, 1979 just six days before her 25th birthday. Levi Strauss International honors her memory with the "Diane Clare Fagerland Memorial Library" at their offices in North Hampton, England.
