Susan Kortum, 60, of Custer, SD, lost her life to breast cancer on Feb. 3, 2012. Her final days were peacefully spent at her home with family, friends, and her loving and loyal dogs by her side.

Susan was born March 30, 1951 in Pierre, SD to the late Leigh and Donna LaFurge. She was the youngest of 4 daughters: She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Kortum (July 2010) and her parents Leigh and Donna LaFurge.

Susan had many creative passions throughout her lifetime. Her love of sewing, machine and hand quilting was always a constant, which led to her business at the Quilt Shop (1998), but she also knitted, crocheted, and enjoyed needlework and gardening. Her woodworking talents ranged from small, beautiful painted crafts to the large scale in building her home in Custer with her husband. She was meticulous in her work and paid attention to detail in her crafting endeavors. She was an amazing artist and was unselfish with her talent and advice. She touched the lives of many with her generosity, teaching, mentoring and sharing her talents with others.
Survivors include her step-son, Douglas (Tammy) Kortum of Ft. Pierre, SD; step-daughters, Cynthia (Dan) Clark of Winner, SD; Denise (Steve) Winckler of Anderson, TX; Pamela Guidry of Pearland, TX; sisters, Barbara Feller of Pierre; Judy (Wayne) Hoellein of Chamberlain, SD; Nancy (Larry) Galinat of Pierre, SD; eight grandchildren ; two great-grandchild; 3 nieces; 5 nephews and her longtime friend and coworker, Annette Miller.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship with Pastor Tom Opoien and Pastor Kent Narum officiating.
A memorial has been established in Sue's name to benefit the Susan G. Koman Cancer Research for South Dakota.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer. Written condolences may be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
