Helen Kathryn Witherspoon, 91, of Ventura, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, of heart failure complicated by Trans Ischemic Attacks.

Helen was born June 16, 1920, in Regent, N.D., to Alfred and Martha Wirstad Romsos. Helen grew up in Portland, Ore., and attended Jefferson High School. At 25, Helen was widowed when her first husband, George Conrad Hohnstein, who served in the United States Army, was killed at the Battle of the Bulge, 1945. Helen and her one-year-old boy Gary George Hohnstein lived with her parents in Portland, Ore.

Helen and James D. Witherspoon married in 1949 and relocated to Southern California to go into business. The Witherspoon's lived in Downey, Calif., for 21 years before returning to Ventura where they operated Ventura Rubbish Service. Mrs. Witherspoon supported her husband in business. She was a homemaker enjoying cooking, decorating, volunteer work and quilting. She was a leader with her daughter in Girl Scouts, supported the Republican Party, and a member of I-Da-Ka Women's Club. Helen and her husband James enjoyed traveling together and were active walkers both in their neighborhood and at nearby parks.

Helen is survived by her husband of 62 years, James D. Witherspoon of Ventura; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Carol Hohnstein of Springville, Calif., and Grant and Phyllis Witherspoon of Ventura; daughter, Linda Jewelle Witherspoon and fianc Craig Phelps McBride of Park City, Utah; grandchildren: Jill, Wendy and Matt Witherspoon all of Ventura; granddaughters and their husbands, Christy and Steve Choate of San Jose, Kerry and Ronnie Priest of Bakersfield; great-grandchildren, Kelly and Kyle Choate and Emilie and Aaron Priest.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, with Dr. Leonard DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.

The family would like to thank Helen's wonderful caregivers at Mariposa Valley, especially Beta, Louis and Karina Ramirez, and the devoted staff who provided such kind and loving care.

Memorial contributions may be made in Helen's memory to Mariposa Valley, 8217 Tiara Street, Ventura, CA 93004, for the resident's activities and projects.
