His parents were Ida Allen McLeland (later Capps) and David William McLeland of Oklahoma. His mother is buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Henryetta, OK.

He was the grandson of Cordellia Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Jones) McLeland and Isaac "Ike" W. McLeland.

He was married to Minizel "Minnie" Howard McLeland. Minizel's sister was married to Wilbur "Bill" Parker.

He was killed in an auto accident in Los Angeles. Someone left a house parked in a street at night and he ran into it. From the Press-Telegram 12 Dec 1957 - Long Beach, California, it said "he swerved around the house and hit the garage. It was located on Figueroa St. between 101st and 102nd Sts. He suffered serious head injuries and internal injuries."

He served in the 1st Infantry Division 1940-1945. He was wounded 2 times in combat during WWII. He served in Company A, 18th Inf. RGT. He landed on Omaha Beach, 1st wave, on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
