James William Ham, of Lubbock, affectionately known as "Hambone," passed away at the age of 86 on Friday, April 10, 2009. He was born October 11, 1922 in Petty to Andrew Frank and Joicie Fair (Lynn) Ham. James was the tenth of 12 children, surviving all siblings. The family moved to Hurlwood before James started school. He married the love of his life, Orabelle Byers on September 10, 1941 in Bisbee, Ariz. while working in the copper mines alongside many of his brothers. After returning to Lubbock, Hambone worked for Furr Foods for 42 years, beginning as a truck driver and retiring as manager of the Frozen Foods Department. He was a charter member and deacon of Monterey Baptist Church. Orabelle preceded him in death on May 25, 2000.

His survivors include his three sons, Dwight Ham and wife Cheryl of Sunrise, Fla., W. A. "Buddy" Ham of Lubbock, and Kelvin Ham and wife Beverly of Lubbock; two daughters, Kay Kirkland and husband Bill of Temple, and Donna Clark and husband Mark of Mineola. He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Penny Ham in 2008. He was blessed with 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-love, Janice House. "Uncle Jim" loved and was loved by many nephews and nieces.

Hambone was an avid sports fan. He coached Little League along with Furr's softball and basketball teams. In his later years, he became a collector of pigs and caps. His "cap room" with over 2,000 caps was a delight for visitors and a symbol of how he was loved as they were gifts from friends and family from around the world. Hambone blessed those who knew him with a tremendous sense of humor and hope in all circumstances.
