LIFE OF MRS. MARTHA ANN JERVIS LARKIN
Mrs. Martha Jervis Larkin was born in Democrat Township, Carroll County on November 6, 1856 to Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Jervis. Martha was the fourth of ten children (four boys and six girls). She was born in an old log house on a farm that was called the “Prairie Place,” which was owned by her father (Isaiah Jervis) before he was married.
In 1862 Martha with her parents (Isaiah Jervis and Rebecca Walker Campbell Jervis) and brothers and sisters moved to Rossville, Indiana. She entered school at Rossville and went one year, then her father bought a farm located in Democrat Township, Section 15. Mr. and Mrs. Jervis and their family moved to this farm and lived in a log house. Martha entered school for her second year in the Weikland School house located in Section 16 on what is now Larry Strong farm. In 1873 the Oakland School house was built. Martha received the rest of her education there. She studies Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, and Spelling.
Martha’s father (ISAIAH JERVIS) owned and ran a large saw mill. In 1872 her father, Isaiah Jervis built what was then called a modern house. The lumber that he used for building the house was sawed in his own mill. It took two years to build the house. At this time, Martha Jervis was out of school. She stayed at home to help her mother with her work because Martha’s father owned and farmed about 1,000 acres of land and of course that required lots of hired men. It was then that Martha learned to be a good cook.
In 1871, the railroad was built through the home farm in section 15. The first train that ran on that track was the first train that Martha had seen. Before that time, her brother hauled lumber form the sawmill to Delphi, Indiana and often times after returning home, he would tell of seeing a train and Martha had often wished to see one. There was quite a strip of land through the home farm that was used for the railroad right-of-way. Mr. Isaiah Jervis received for the land that was used for that purpose, a pass for any member of his immediate family to ride free of charge on the train any place they wanted to go. In 1878, when Martha was 22 years of age, her father was killed. Then Martha’s brothers farmed the land with 6 head of oxen and 30 hear of horses. When the boys were married, the farms were divided among the children. Martha received a farm in section ?.
Martha and her mother, Rebecca Walker Campbell Jervis, lived together on the old home place. Martha was married January 13, 1914, and she and her husband, Mr. Thomas Miles Larkin, continued to live with Martha’s mother until she died August 17, 1914.
In the spring of 1915, Martha and her husband moved to Frankfort, Indiana where they lived for fourteen years. In 1929 they came back to her farm in Carroll County, Indiana, and lived four years then went to Illinois and lived there two years. Martha’s husband died in Illinois on October 19, 1935. A short time after the death of Mr. Larkin, Martha came back to Frankfort, Indiana and visited with her in-lawed granddaughter then came to Carroll County and visited her niece for a few days and since she has been residing with her sister, Mrs. Luella Emmeline Jervis Reef. Martha is now 80 years of age. ~ Lois Reef
