King of Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy, King of the Franks

Childeric II was the middle son of Clovis II and Saint Balthild, and grandson of Dagobert I. His brothers were Chlothar and Theuderic.

Childeric married his cousin, Bilichild, the daughter of King Sigebert III and Queen Chimnechild of Burgundy, also a granddaughter of Dagobert I. They were married in 668, although the Bishop of Leodegar protested the union. Childeric and Bilichild had two sons:
* Dagobert, died with his parents aged five
* Chilperic II, King of the Franks to 718

Childeric's father, the King of Neustria and Burgundy, died in 657 or 658. Childeric's older brother, Chlothar, became the sole king in 661, placed on the throne by Ebroin, the mayor of Nuestria. In 662, Chlothar gave Austrasia to Chilperic, who was still a child as he physically raised up on the warrior shields and proclaimed king.

When Chlothar died in 673, his kingdom went to Childeric's younger brother, Theuderic. Prominent Burundian nobles led by a Saint Leodegar and an Adalrich, approached Chilperic, inviting his to become king of all the Franks, Austrasia, Nuestria and Burgundy. Childeric displaced his brother and became the King of the Franks.

The man who held the true power, Mayor and regent of Austrasia, Wulfoald, became Mayor in Nuestria and Burgundy as well. This displaced Ebroin and displeased the Burgundian barons.

Childeric, his wife and his eldest son, Dagobert, then five, were on a hunting trip in the Forest of Lognes near Livry in Picardy when all three were assassinated by three disgruntled Neustrains; Bodilo, Amalbert and Ingobert. All three were buried at Saint-Germain-des-Prés near Paris.

In the aftermath, Wulfoald fled to Austrasia and proclaimed Dagobert II, the son of Sigebert III and Chimnechild of Burgundy king, but Ebroin supported Clovis III, thought to be Theuderic's son. Dagobert was finally placed on the throne, only to be assassinated in 679 and succeeded by Chilperic II, the younger son of Childeric and Bilichild.
