Pad Dudney was very active in community life and in his church. Soon after he settled in the Roaring River Community that was to be named for him, he met with a group of other men from the community to hew logs to build a schoolhouse. The men agreed that whoever was the first man to hew a log would be honored by having the school named for him. Pad Dudney was the winner; thus the school and subsequently the whole community was named Dudney's Hill. Pad Dudney's influence at Dudney's Hill School was further noted by the fact that his daughter Polly Ann and his son Mack were both teachers before 1900. His grandson Abner Chaffin was a teacher there in 1908.
