George Riley Cox was the son of William Cox and Sophia Dameson he was born in January of 1840 in York County, Virginia. George enlisted in Company I of the 32nd Virginia Militia on May 27 1861, at York County, Virginia. He served November-December, 1864 and during the Appomattox Campaign of the American Civil War he was captured at Five Forks around Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on April 1, 1865. He Took the Oath of Allegiance at Point Lookout, June 10, 1865, and was released the same day. Census records show he live in York County and worked as a farmer most of his life. He married Mahala Wood, daughter of Robert Mead Wood and Mary Ann Rebecca Rylie, on Dec 28, 1870 at Yorktown, York County, Virginia. They had four children Sallie, Annie L, Sarah Lee and Charles William Cox. George died of heart failure on December 23, 1908 and was buried with full Military Honors at Bethel Church Cemetery.
