Now that the Chesapeake had severed all communications with the shore and was standing out to sea the avowed purpose of engaging the enemy her began to realize the condition of the ship Their commander had arrived in Boston only ten days before was totally unacquainted with his officers men ship The first lieutenant Octavius Augustus Page of Virginia an officer of experience was confined shore with lung fever from which he died three afterward aged twenty eight His place was filled Third Lieutenant Augustus C Ludlow who an officer of merit was scarcely twenty one years age 1 and who was in a strange and new position position most important in a frigate so far as navigating the ship and handling the men were concerned especially important in breaking in and a crew Second Lieutenant Thompson was absent account of his health and Acting Lieutenants Nicholson and Pearce also were absent for the same reason George Budd the only commissioned sea officer of experience in the ship was made second lieutenant places of third and fourth lieutenants were vacant were supplied by Midshipmen William Cox and Edward J Ballard who now served in these for the first time.

Octavius Augustine Page eldest Lieutenant United States Navy born about 1765 and died in Boston Mass June 1813 of fever during the war of 1812 aged about 48 He was an officer of the ship Chesapeake and was sick in Boston when the memorable fight with the Shannon took place The news of the British victory and the death of Captain Lawrence no doubt hastened his death He was unmarried In the American Universal Cyclopaedia he is mentioned as the son of Gov John Page an evident mistake
