A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Weiss Funeral Home, Milwaukee, Wis. for retired coach Walter Rip Van Winkle, a London native.

Van Winkle, whose career included head coaching jobs at Kentucky Wesleyan College, the University of Cincinnati and Miami of Ohio, died in Milwaukee Thursday, Jan. 6, 1994.

As the athletic director and coach of all sports at Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro from the mid-1920's to the early 1930s - his 1927 freshman football team won a state championship.

During the late 1930's and early '40s, Van Winkle was a scout and public address announcer for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.

He also was a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Committee.

Van Winkle was christened Water R. Van Winkle. But after teammates on Cincinnati Reds farm teams began referring to him as "Rip" - he ad his name legally changed to Walter Rip Van Winkle.

The Kentucky bourbon Old Rip Van Winkle also is named for him. Hi cousin, Julian Van Winkle owned the Louisville distillery where the bourbon is made.

He served in the Navy during World War II, and also was a retired employee of Huntington Laboratories - manufacturers of maintenance and sanitation products.

Surviving are his wife, Jerry Van Winkle; five daughters, Betty Jean Liberski and Mary Bush Schweitzer, both of Milwaukee, Martha Hughes Rogers of Ormond Beach, Fla., Hope Van Winkle of New York City and Debra Van Winkle of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
