obituary from the Lewiston Herald - July 3rd, 2001

Rolland E. Hawley, 76, Moscow
Jul 3, 2001
Rolland Eugene Hawley, 76, passed away Friday morning, June 29, 2001, at his rural Moscow home, apparently of a heart attack.

It is the same location at which he was born to Lila Rhodes Hawley and Eugene Hawley July 24, 1924.

He started helping with farm work at an early age, driving a team of horses at the age of 8 while hauling hay. He farmed continually for 70 years and remained actively involved on the family farm until his death. He attended the rural Naylor School and Moscow High School.

In 1947, he married Glenda Fleener. They were divorced in 1973.

He married Anna Sorweide in 1974. She passed away in 1978.

He was a life member of the Moose Lodge. He was active in the community and served on the Federal Land Bank Board and the Latah County Grain Growers Board, as well as with the Idaho State Wheat Growers Association. He was a rural fire district commissioner, a leader in the Mission Springs 4-H Club and a charter member of Latah County Search and Rescue. He also belonged to the Moscow Junior Rodeo and was an early member of Latah County Snowdrifters Association. He received an award of merit from Idaho State Wheat Growers Association for designing, building and manufacturing tractor cabs.

He had a lifelong love of horses and especially enjoyed trail rides in the mountains. A recent highlight in his life was the completion of a week-long ride with the group Gentlemen on Horseback to the Pierre Lake area in northeastern Washington. He was already making plans for next year's ride to the Palouse River drainage area.

His entire life was lived in the same Palouse hills in which his grandfather had his homestead claim.

He is survived by four sons and their wives, Lee and Charlotte, Mark and Barb, Kyle and Lisa and Stan and his companion, Yvonne; one daughter, Carol Dellinger and husband Mark; nine grandchildren; and one new-born great-granddaughter. Also surviving is his longtime special friend, Hildur Lovel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Keith, and his two sisters, Annette Galbraith and Tressa (Terry) Ruddell.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Gary Durham will officiate, and burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.
