John Melvin Hines, 82, of Chillicothe, died 10:50 a.m. Sunday, February 5, 2012 in Logan Elm Health Care Center, Circleville following an extended illness.
He was born March 21, 1929, in Pike County, to the late Harold and Hazel Bapst Hines. On June 19, 1954, he married the former Janice Larrick who died December 27, 1975.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and John Payne; a son, Jason T. Hines, all of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Carrie Fischer, Sarah (Ryan) Gumm, Sayre (Sarah) Payne, Addie Payne, Nicholas Payne and Amber Hines; six great grandchildren; a brother, Stanley (Patsy) Hines, of Waverly, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sons, John Stephen Hines and Joel T. Hines; and a grandson, Johnathan Hines.
John served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from the City of Chillicothe where he had been the Director of City Utilities and was a City Surveyor. As Utilities Director, he ran his department with no nonsense and common sense. He was instrumental in the implementation and construction of the present waste water treatment facility.
John spent many years of retirement at Lake White and was fondly remembered as the "Mayor of Shorty City". His fish and chicken fries were legendary and he never missed an opportunity to dance. Friends were always welcome on his porch.
A private family graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2012 in Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
