Holton was probably born in 1861, as evidenced by the 1870 and 1880 census, but he always said that he was b on Friday the 13 and after marriage gave his DOB as 1866 though 1865 was the year in which January 13 was on a Friday. He was sometimes called "Holly" or "Sandy".
He married Nellie Ramsay on 5 June 1907 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Isle of Wight Co, VA. She was the daughter of his friend James A. Ramsay, with whom he worked as a carpenter in the Norfolk shipyards. Holton told his friend that he intended to marry his daughter when she grew up and waited about seven years until Nellie was 19 to marry her; he was 46.
He died after being hit by a car while crossing the street on his way to buy kerosene. He was originally buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Bladensburg, MD as was his son, Charlie. After the death of his wife, both he and Charlie were moved to Fort Lincoln Cemetery where she was buried.
