Walter Lee Bird was born July 8, 1912, in the Big Cove Community of Madison County, Alabama. His birth was said to have taken place near the present day location of the Clearwater Subdivion off of Terry Drake Road.

Walter married Bertie Lorene Adams on November 16, 1930, in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. It was a double marriage ceremony, as Walter's cousin, Winfred Byrd, exchanged vows with his bride, Lorene Rhoden, at the same.

Walter and Lorene would become the parents of ten children - Rosie Lucille (Cowan), John Wiley, Peggy Sue (Knight), Alton Wayne, Sammy Ellis, Agnes Jane (Simmons), Phyllis Marie (Schultz), Nancy Kay (Martin), Ronald Dale, and Kevin Alan. Of these children - only Phyllis and Kevin were given the surname spelled Bird. The others were all spelled Byrd, which is the spelling Lorene preferred.

Walter was a farmer and later an electrician, wiring the first home in Big Cove, which received electricity - that of Mr. Ed Ellett. In the 1940's, Walter purchased his family home at the corner of present day Walter Bird Drive and Old Big Cove Road, which is where he lived out the rest of his days.

Lorene died in 1975; and Walter later married a widow by the name of Ruby Jewel Rhoden Dodson on October 14, 1979. Jewel's sister, Mary Lorene Rhoden, was the bride of Walter's cousin, Winfred, during their double marriage ceremony. The girls had been orphaned early in life raised by Tom & Kate Bell (also buried at Neal's Chapel).

Walter lived a long, relatively healthly life. He passed away on February 27, 2003, at the Huntsville Hospital surrounded by his family. The night before his death was the first he had ever spent in the hospital.
