For his actions at St. Martin Revere he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "...extraordinary heroism in action near St. Martin Revere, France, October 11, 1918. Hearing a call for help from a man lying beyond the front line, Private Bryant, a stretcher bearer, unhesitatingly went to his assistance, although the spot was under heavy fire from enemy machine guns and snipers. As he was approaching the wounded man, he was instantly killed by an enemy sniper.”
