Franklin Marquis Lockwood, MD, age 95, of Fort Smith, passed away March 1, 2019.

Dr. Lockwood was a retired general surgeon. During his career of more than 35 years, he touched thousands of lives with his compassionate care. From his experience in Korea, Japan, and Fort Smith, he learned to become one of the area’s finest doctors. He taught his children and grandkids to value education, to take care of the earth, and to live within their means.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents Charles “CC” Lockwood and Amelia Lockwood, his first wife Mary Spring Crafts Lockwood, and his son Franklin Marquis Lockwood Jr.

Frank was born in a farmhouse near Columbia, Missouri on Jan. 2, 1924. At age three, the family moved to Arkansas. C.C. Lockwood was a County Agricultural Agent in Marshall, AR. and later in Clarksville, AR. where Frank grew up and called home. Midway through high school, Clarksville High burned down. Frank continued his education by living in a boarding house in Fort Smith and graduated in 1941 at Fort Smith High School. He attended the University of Missouri accelerated pre-med program for two years and then enlisted in the Navy. Medical school was courtesy of Uncle Sam, through the U.S. Navy’s highly competitive V-12 Scholarship program. With this scholarship, he attended Northwestern University Medical School and graduated in Dec. 1946. He interned and completed his general surgery residency training at Kansas City General Hospital. In June 1950, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served seven months at a MASH Hospital in Korea and six months in the Air Force General Hospital, Nagoya, Japan. He transferred to Fort Chaffee, AR in 1951 and separated from the Army in 1954. (In 8 years, Frank served in the Army, Navy and Air Force) He joined Holt Krock Clinic in 1954 as the 13th doctor. When he retired in 1989 the clinic had grown to 130 doctors. Dr. Lockwood was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Southwest Surgical Congress, a member of A.M.A., Arkansas State Medical Society, International Congress of Surgery, served term as President of the Sebastian County Medical Society, and a Surgery Instructor for Sparks School of Nursing. Dr. Lockwood was a member of the Medical Staff at Sparks Memorial, St Edward Mercy, Crawford County and Sallisaw Hospitals. He served terms as Chief of Surgery at Sparks and St Edwards Hospitals. Frank was an avid golfer and a member of Hardscrabble Country Club. After retirement he had four “hole in ones”. He was a member of the Noon Civics Club. Since 1995, he has been a member of First Presbyterian Church with his wife of 23 years, Mary Anne Lockwood.

Dr. Lockwood is survived by his wife, Mary Anne of the home, his daughter Ellen Warren (Terry) of Lake Tenkiller, sons C. C. Lockwood (Sue) of St Francisville LA., and Bill Lockwood (Sharon) of Fort Smith and stepsons Randy Knight (Sally) of Atascadero, CA., Richard Knight (Lennie B) of Burleson, TX., and Ken Knight (Pam) of Bakersfield, CA. Grandchildren Jennifer Lockwood, Adrienne Shaunfield, Janey Mitchell, Emily Johnston, Lee Aucoin, Adam Aucoin, Levi Warren, Preston Warren, and great-grandchildren River Shaunfield, Parker Souvannasing, Spring Shaunfield, Epley Mitchell, and Milo Mandarino, Sadie Warren, Sawyer Warren and Annabelle Spring Aucoin. Step-grandchildren Sarah Cook, Anna Cooney, Jon Knight, Sam Knight , Hope Helms, Melody Knight, Alex Knight, and Charlie Knight, and numerous step great grandchildren.

Dr. Lockwood has stated in the past, “I feel grateful to have practiced in the Golden Age of Medicine and to have had a good life in Fort Smith Arkansas and the United States of America.” Dr. Lockwood will be remembered as a kind and skilled surgeon and was referred to as “the singing surgeon”.

Memorial service will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church. Cremation is under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
