Rittman Press - A letter to his mother, dated Feb 1918: Dear Mother: I am very glad to know that I am to be sent across very soon and only hope you will be able to feel about this as I do.
Since this war is going on, and we must bring it to an end, I would not be satisfied if I did not get to go over. I am not a bit afraid and am not going to let myself be ccared about not coming back.
But if something should happen to me there is no one depending upon me, and I will have given my life for a cause that is well worth it.
I would have liked to come home in the worst way, but it was impossible. Hoping that you will not worry about me, I will close. With much love,
Your son, Howard

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Howard A. Bair, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 345th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, A.E.F., near Barricourt, France, 2 November 1918. Calling on his platoon to follow, Lieutenant Bair pushed forward and attacked enemy machine-gun nests. After killing two of the enemy, he himself was killed by a hand grenade, while accepting the surrender of another of the enemy.
